HK/NY (extra credit)
It’s always interesting to see different cultures being integrated in films, especially by other student. Being from Bangladesh, I relate to the mix of cultures that can influence film making, story telling, shooting style, etc.
HK/NY Student Film Festival was no different. It was nice to the intersectionality of different culture and backgrounds. The common theme was “borders” and for films were wonderfully made. Most of the films had medium, medium close up and close up shots with smooth transitions. One of them was shot mostly from a low angle, which made it stand out.
The films covered serious topics - sexual assault, mental health, dealing with family aging, suicide, etc. While some were covered in fully serious tones, others had some comedic relief. There was one about a girl wanting to commit suicide but getting interrupted every time. Her mental health comes to the attention of her loved ones only when she stops using social media which particularly interesting to me because I’m writing a research paper on social media addiction.
The color corrections were done well which really set the mood for the films.
