What I Hear (blog 2)

As I’m leaving my house I hear the fence door closing behind me. It a creaking sound but the kind a steel fence makes. There are cars softly whooshing by. Slight chirping of birds. Voices of people chatting as they walk past me. Either a cart or a stroller being rolled behind me.

I’m crossing the street now, I hear a truck’s engine running. Voices in front of men a mosque, they are speaking in Bengali. Through all of this there is a calmness in the air, no sound of harsh wind blowing or leaves rustling against each other.

The voices around me have multiplied, I’m approaching the circle junction. There’s the ice truck music looping as I’m waiting to cross the street. Footsteps that are normal paced and ones that are fast paced. The “ding” of train doors closing. Train revving up and pulling out from the station across the street. Mild sounds of laughter and stories being exchanged in front of the smoke shop while a homeless man is slurring and swearing to himself. Sounds of engines running. Carts being pulled out and pushed in outside the C-Town. This area sounds a lot busier than the area around my house.
